How to Pack for an Actor's Headshot Photoshoot

Professional headshot photos can be expensive, so in order get the most out of your session you will want to prepare ahead of time to ensure you will be able to get as many different looks as possible. One great way to do this is to pack a suitcase ahead of time with a number of different outfits and accessories. Here are three tips for making the best use of your time. 
 

1.) The More Options The Better

Wear a neutral base piece such as a camisole, t-shirt or solid color shirt or blouse, with bright or coordinating patterned pieces over it. Try and layer your looks in a way that allows you to remove one piece to create an entirely different look. For instance, wearing a bulky scarf over a suit jacket over a button-up cardigan will allow you to quickly take headshots with three very different looks by simply removing a layer. Also take some time in advance to try on your outfits and play with different accessories. Hats, glasses, scarves, ties and earrings are just a few things can create an entirely different look from the same base pieces. Even small changes can make a big difference. A buttoned up shirt collar and tightened tie creates an entirely different look than a loosened tie and unbuttoned collar.

2.) Pack a travel steamer

Even if you are shooting a headshot for a casual and/ or sloppy character, the bright lights of a photo studio will actually accentuate wrinkles making them far more visible in photos than they are to the naked eye. So even for the most sloppy of characters be sure your clothes are as wrinkle free as possible. 
 

3.) Men pack a shaving kit, ladies pack your own makeup and hair products

Again, you will want to prepare for as many different looks as possible. For men, this may mean starting the day with a thick beard, then trimming it down to perhaps a mustache and goatee and then maybe down to stubble before shaving your face clean. For ladies, you want to be sure and have your own makeup, because even the best makeup artists will have a style they prefer that you may not like. It's always best to be prepared. Also, take a tip from the men and start with the least or lightest makeup first, and end the day with the heaviest makeup. It's always easier to add more makeup than it is to clean it off and take it away. The same is true of your hair. Start the day with the most natural look and end it with the most heavily styled looks.
